A Lamp Shade for the Connoisseur in you

As a youngster many of my hobby class teachers taught me how to make lamp shades. They look graceful and always reflect the taste of the house owner. You could make a lamp shade at home with a cloth mounted on a metal frame. You could use paper craft material to make lamp shades and of course if you want to add that rich look to your home you can opt for glass lamp shades or chandelier lamp shades. To add that old world charm nothing like a Tiffany lamp shade and for that eclectic look with a taste for the unusual a drum lamp shade.

A Lamp shade, if not well designed and placed with the intent to just adding another object to the room, can look like that ordinary statue that you picked up at a sale. If well designed and placed with the color scheme and the setting of the room in mind it can look quite irresistible. Depending on your taste and sense of décor a lamp shade could look commonplace or a work of art.

For many people lamp shades have just one use to light up the room. One could even use an over head bulb for that. You can easily design your own lampshades.

lamp_shadeTo create an attractive home which is a treat to the eyes and where all like to hang around, you need to think like a professional. Most professionals work around a theme. The theme could be anything, traditional with heavy furnishing or contemporary which is minimalist in nature where less is more or a comfortable look which is a fine blend of both. You could even plan a period look with a collection of period items like paintings and tapestries, heavy brass or glass lamp shades.

You could even opt for themes that are based on geography like a Greek style home, an oriental theme complete with sliding doors, elegant French theme or the comfortable English homes.

A popular period theme is the Victorian look, which has heavy furnishings, ornate decorative items and a lamp shade here and there. Another look which is quite popular as it does not restrict our choices or imagination is the informal eclectic look. The eclectic look often reflects the individuality of the owner.

A few things to bear in mind while you choose the theme of your house and apply it:

Firstly, don’t overdo any thing, maintain a balance. Place large pieces of furniture around the living room to create a sense of proportion. Large pieces of furniture like bookshelves or clocks should face each other and should not be placed adjacent. Now fit in smaller furniture like side table or those small statues and other art pieces in the gaps. An attractive lamp shade placed in the corner can add to the charm of the décor.

Colors borrowed from nature like blue, white, green are natural to the décor and colors like black should be limited to smaller objects. Walls look best in pastel shades; you could add some contrast by edging with a darker shade but stick to lighter shade for the main theme. A well painted wall will allow you to show your decorative items like a painting to the best effect.

For the floor you can use wood, or carpet of a darker shade. You could even throw some rug pieces to add some interest.

Artistic collections should be placed together to bring out their uniqueness. A collection of family photos adds that warm and lived in look to the room. Add some cushions and pillows to give that touch of comfort. Several cushions thrown together look very comfortable.

Lastly a well lighted room adds a lot of attraction. A  lamp shade placed in the passage and the living room will not just light up and focus the right spots but also look artistic.
